What is Rösti?
Roesti used to be the breakfast dish of Swiss farmers. However, today this grated and fried potato cake finds its place on the tables as a main dish or snack at any time of the day.
When making rösti, Swiss people use different methods. Each region has its own rösti recipe.
I will be sharing a few of these methods with you below.
Ingredients for Rösti Recipe
- 4 medium potatoes
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 spoons of cream cheese (optional)
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of black pepper
- A pinch of nutmeg
- Butter
How to Make Potato Rösti?
- Boil the potatoes. (Ideally, it is recommended to boil it overnight in order to grate properly and keep the potatoes in the refrigerator after cooling them completely)
- The next day, take the boiled potatoes out of the fridge, peel them and grate in a bowl.
- Take the boiled potatoes out of the fridge the next day, peel them and grate in a bowl.
- Heat the oil over high heat in a pan.
- Take a large tablespoon of the mixture, drop it into the oil, press it to take the shape of the pan and cook until the bottom is brown. (12-15 minutes)
- When the bottom turns brown, add a little more oil to the pan. Turn the rösti over and fry the other side. (Another 12-15 minutes)
How to Serve Potato Rösti?
- If you wish, you can add bacon into the grated potato and cook it together, or you can put the bacon on the rösti while serving.
- Apart from that, you can add caramelized onion, cheese or fried eggs on the rösti.
- While cooking, you can add onion or any cheese you like, and serve apple paste with it.
Rösti Recipe Tips
- You need to use a non-stick pan.
