The Italian alphabet is a 21-letter alphabet consisting of 5 vowels and 16 consonants.

The letter C is pronounced in two different ways.

1 – Pronounced as K.

When the letters “a”, “o” “u” or “h” come after the letter C, the letter “C” sounds “K“.

2 – Pronounced as CH.

In cases where the letters “e” or “i” come after the letter C, the letter “C” gives the sound “CH“.

• cia: cha
• ciu pronounced as chu. The letter i is not pronounced.

• che: ke
• chi is pronounced as ki. The letter h is not pronounced.

The letter h is not pronounced in Italian.

How To Pronounce The Letter G In The Italian Alphabet?

The letter G is pronounced in two different ways.

1 – Pronounced as G as in general

In cases where the letters “e” or “i” come after the letter G, the letter “G” gives the sound “G” as in general

2 – Pronounced as G as in gun

In cases where the letters “a“, “o“, “u” or “h” come after the letter G, the letter “G” gives the sound “G” as in gun.

• ghe: ge
• ghi pronounced as gi. The letter h is not pronounced.

How To Pronounce The Letter S In The Italian Alphabet?

The letter S is pronounced in two different ways.

1 – Pronounced as S.

• If the letter S is at the beginning of the sentence followed by a vowel;

• If the consonants ”f, p, q, t” come after the letter S;

2 – Pronounced as Z.

If the letter S is followed by other consonants;

If the letter S is between two vowels;

How to Read the Letters SC in the Italian Alphabet

The letter group SC is pronounced in two different ways.

1 – Pronounced as SH.

In cases where the letters “e” or “i” come after the letter Sc, it gives the sound of “sh“.

2- It is pronounced as SK.

In cases where the letters “a“, “o“, “u” or “h” come after the Sc sound group, it gives the “SK” sound.

• scia: şa
• scio: şo
• Sciu is pronounced as shu. The letter i is not pronounced.

• sche: ske
• Schi is pronounced as ski. The letter h is not pronounced.

How to Pronounce the Letters GN in the Italian Alphabet?

In cases where the letter “n” follows the letter “g“, the letter group “gn” is pronounced as “ny“.

How to Pronounce the Letters GL in the Italian Alphabet?

In cases where the vowel ”i” is immediately followed by the letter group “gl”, the letter group “gl” is pronounced as “ly”.

How To Pronounce The Letter Z In The Italian Alphabet?

The letter “Z” is pronounced as “z” if it is at the beginning of the word, and “ts” if it is in the middle of the word. The “zz” sound in the middle of the word is also pronounced as “ts” in the same way.

Numbers in Italian: Numbers from 0 to 20

There is no rule for numbers between 0 and 10 in Italian. Even if the numbers between 10 and 20 follow a rule, there are some changes in the pronunciations as the numbers come together. If you learn the numbers between 0 and 20 and then the multiples of 10, you can compose other numbers without having to memorize them.

Let’s learn the numbers between 0 and 20 in the table below.

Numbers in Italian: Numbers from 20 to 100

First, let’s see the numbers that are a multiple of 10.

When you want to add another number next to these numbers, which are multiples of 10, do as following; Let’s say you want to say 25, then you just need to put “venti” meaning 20 first and “cinque” meaning 5 and say venticinque.

44 = quaranta + quattro = quarantaquattro

67 = sessanta + sette = sessantasette

• If the first number ends with a vowel and the number next to it begins with a vowel, the vowel at the end of the first number omits. For example;

31 = trenta + uno = trantuno

28 = venti + otto = ventotto

Numbers in Italian: Over 100

• To create numbers with 100, it is enough to say all the numbers in order just like in English.

200 = due + cento = duecento

257 = duecento + cinquanta + sette = duecentocinquantasette

1179 = mille + cento + settanta + nove = millecentosettantanove

• 1000 is mille, but when you say multiples of 1000 (2000, 3000 etc.), mille becomes mila.

2000 = duemila

5000 = cinquemila

2179 = duemila + cento + settanta + nove = duemilacentosettantanove

Ordinal Numbers: 1 to 10

Ordinal numbers between 1 and 10 are irregular.

Ordinal numbers are formed by adding the suffix -esimo to the end of all numbers after 10 and dropping the vowel at the end of the number.

Twentieth = venti + essimo = ventessimo

Eleventh = undici + essimo = undicessimo

Thousandth = mille + essimo = millessimo

İtalyanca Sayılar: 20 ile 100 arası sayılar

Öncelikle 10’un katları olacak şekilde sayıları görelim.

10’un katları olan bu sayıların yanına başka bir sayı getirmek istediğinizde Türkçede de olduğu gibi yalnızca getirmek istediğiniz sayıyı eklemeniz yeterlidir. Yani 25 demek isterseniz 20 anlamına gelen ”venti” ve 5 anlamına gelen ”cinque”yi birleştirip venticinque demeniz yeterlidir.

44 = quaranta + quattro = quarantaquattro

67 = sessanta + sette = sessantasette

• Eğer ilk sayının sonu sesli ile bitiyor ve yanına gelen sayı sesli ile başlıyorsa ilk sayının sonundaki sesli düşer. Örneğin;

31 = trenta + uno = trantuno

28 = venti + otto = ventotto

İtalyanca Sayılar: 100’den sonrası

• 100 ile sayı oluşturmak için Türkçedeki gibi tüm sayıları sırasıyla söylemeniz yeterlidir.

200 = due + cento = duecento

257 = duecento + cinquanta + sette = duecentocinquantasette

1179 = mille + cento + settanta + nove = millecentosettantanove

• 1000 mille demektir ancak 1000’in katlarını söylerken (2000, 3000 gibi) mille mila olur.

2000 = duemila

5000 = cinquemila

2179 = duemila + cento + settanta + nove = duemilacentosettantanove

Sıra Bildiren Sayılar: 1 ile 10 arası

1 ile 10 arasındaki sıra sayıları kuralsızdır.

10’dan sonraki tüm sayıların sonuna -esimo eki getirilip sayının sonundaki sesli harf düşürülerek sıra sayıları oluşturulur.

Yirminci = venti + essimo = ventesimo

On birinci = undici + essimo = undicesimo

Bininci = mille + essimo = millesimo
