Your trip to Turkey is approaching. But you have no idea about the Turkish language. Are you afraid of being lost or being unable to communicate with people? Worry not, I will show you 3 steps that will always help you get to the right destination.

Turks are very warm-hearted people and they love giving directions. Thanks to them you need to get neither phone nor map with you!

Not only does it describe the address you ask, but we Turks can also offer to take you where you want to go. Uhm, of course, it is useful to make a small note here. We love helping people so much that we don’t need to know the address you ask to be able to describe it. We can also offer to take you to an address we have no idea about, as we love to give directions even if we don’t know where it is!

Therefore, in my humble opinion, if a Turk tells you to go right, please go left. If he/she tells you to go forward, please go back! haha. I am sure that my Turkish friends know that I am joking (or maybe I’m not) and they won’t be offended! I want to start this article with a famous Turkish proverb: ”Her şakada bir gerçeklik payı vardır (Many a true word is spoken in jest).”

Here we go!

Step 1 – Asking for Help on Your Trip to Turkey

Finally, your trip to Turkey has started, and you’re walking on a street. However, you are not sure where to go. Fortunately, there is a Turk ready to help you! The address is written on a piece of paper. First, you have to say “Affedersiniz” (Excuse me) to start the conversation.

Example 1

You: Affedersiniz. Excuse me X: Buyurun? Go ahead? You: Şu adrese nasıl gidebilirim? How can I go to that address?

Example 2

You: Pardon, bakar mısınız? Excuse me, can I ask you something? (literally ”could you look here please”) X: Buyurun? Go ahead? You: Buraya nasıl giderim? How do I get here?

Example 3

You: Merhaba, bir şey sorabilir miyim? Hello, may I ask something? X: Tabii, buyurun. Of course, go ahead. You: Bu adrese nasıl giderim biliyor musunuz? Do you know how do I get to this address?

Example 4

You: Affedersiniz, bir saniyenizi alabilir miyim? Excuse me, may I have your moment please? X: Tabii, nasıl yardımcı olabilirim? Of course, how can I help you? You: Şu adres nerede biliyor musunuz? Do you know where this address is?

If you don’t have any address with you and you only know the name of the place where you want to go, it would be useful to give a small grammar tip here.

A Little bit of Grammar: Turkish Vowel Harmony

Thick vowels: a, ı, u, o

Thin vowels: e, I , ü , ö

Dative Case Suffixes: ”e” or ”a”

Let’s say you would like to go to Taksim.

The rule is this: We look at the last syllable of the word to use the appropriate dative case suffix. If the vowel of the last syllable is thin, we add -e as a suffix, and -a if it is thick.

Examples:

to Taksim – Taksim’e

to Sultanahmet – Sultanahmet’e

to Aksaray – Aksaray’a

to Kadıköy – Kadıköy’e

Please remember that in Turkish two vowels cannot come together. If it does, it means that the word has been translated into Turkish from another language Therefore if a word ends with a vowel and the suffix starts with a vowel you need to add the buffer letter “y”:

to Sirkeci – Sirkeci’ye

You: Bursa’ya nasıl gidebilirim? How can I go to Bursa?

X: Ben de o yöne gidiyorum, atlayın! I’m also going to that direction. Jump in

Eczane nerede? Where is the pharmacy?

Hastaneye nasıl gidebilirim? How can I go to the hospital?

Market nerede? Where is the market?

En yakın karakol nerede? Where is the closest police office?

Step 2 – Understanding the Answer on Your Trip to Turkey

Now it’s time to understand the answers to your questions. Let’s start with some vocabulary.

You: Beşiktaş’a nasıl gidebilirim? How can I go to Beşiktaş?

X: Dümdüz git. İskeleyi göreceksin. Oradan vapura bin. İndiğin yerin yanında. Go straight ahead. You will see the port. Take ferry from there. It is next to where you get off

Example 10

You: Taksim’e nasıl giderim? How can I go to Taksim?

X: Şu caddeyi geç. Sonra sağa dön. Düz git. Sola dön. Köşede minibüsler var. Minibüse bin. En son durak Taksim. Cross that street. Then turn right. Go straight. Turn left. There are minibuses on the corner. Get in a minibus. The last stop is Taksim.

Step 3 – Saying Thank You on Your Trip to Turkey

You got your answer and understood where to go. Now it’s time to say thank you!

Example 11

You: Çok teşekkür ederim. Thank you very much

X: Rica ederim. You are welcome.

Example 12

You: Çok sağ olun, yardım ettiğiniz için teşekkür ederim. Thank you a lot, thanks for the help.

X: Önemli değil, lafı mı olur? İyi tatiller. No problem, don’t mention it. Enjoy your holiday.

Example 13

You: Tamam, yeri anladım. Teşekkür ederim, vaktinizi aldım. Okay, I understood the place. Thank you, I took your time.

Nihayet Türkiye seyahatiniz başladı ve sokakta yürüyorsunuz. Ancak nereye gideceğinizden pek emin değilsiniz. Neyse ki size yardım etmeye hazır bir Türk var!
Adres bir kağıtta yazılı. Öncelikle sohbeti başlatmak için “Affedersiniz” (Excuse me) demelisiniz.

Taksi (taxi)

• Merhaba. Sultanahmet lütfen. (Hello. Sultanahmet please.)

Otobüs (bus)

You need a card to use a bus, especially in Istanbul. You don’t have to talk to the driver to tell you where you want to go.

Minibüs (minibus)

But for minibuses, you should talk to the driver and tell them where you want to go. When you pay the driver, tell him where you are going:

• Bir Kadıköy lütfen! (One person for Kadıköy please.)
• İnecek var! (I want to get off!)
• Müsait bir yerde! (Stop at a convenient place please!)
• Müsait bir yerde inebilir miyim? (Can I get off at a convenient place?)
• Müsait bir yerde inecek var! (I want to get off at a convenient place!)
• İnebilir miyim? (Can I get off?)

Tramvay (tram)

Trams are like buses; you just have to use your card.

Metro (subway)

You have to use your card in the subway as well, just like in tram or bus.

Metrobüs (metrobus)

• Metrobus can be a little stressful if you are in Istanbul. But don’t worry, you don’t have to talk to anyone. The only bad thing about the metrobus is that it is very crowded.
• Here, too, you have to use your card.
• If you notice that you are going in the wrong direction, you can just get off and take the metrobus going in the other direction at no additional cost.

Tickets

• Tek yön. (One way)
• Gidiş-dönüş. (Retun)
• Tek kişi (One person)
• İki Kişi (Two people)

Finally, you can ask someone to take a photo of you as you walk on the street:

• Pardon. Bir fotoğraf çekebilir misiniz? (Pardon me. Can you take a photo?)

Turkish Basic Words

We Turks love to chat with strangers. Do not be surprised if you receive intense attention when you go to Turkey! When they realize that you are a stranger, they will stop you and try to chat with you. In this way, you can find yourself learning Turkish even if you don’t have an intention!

Turks must be assuming that Turkish can only be understood if spoken loudly, because they will most likely be shouting when speaking to you lol. Don’t be afraid if you see someone walking down the road and coming towards you speaking loud Turkish. He’s probably trying to be friends with you haha.

So you will leave a great impression on the people of Turkey by just learning a few words in Turkish. For example, by simply putting your right hand on your chest and saying Eyvallah, you will definitely impress the Turks and be the apple of their eyes!

So, let’s take a look at some basic Turkish words and phrases in order to surprise people on your next trip to Turkey.

Basic Turkish Words: Greeting

As in most languages, we say ”hello” in different ways on the phone and during face-to-face conversation in Turkish.

Normally we say “merhaba” which means “hello” when greeting. But we answer the phone by saying alo or efendim. Interestingly, “efendim” means “sir” in English, but we use this word in many different ways.

For example, when we do not understand something and ask the other party to repeat what was said, we say “efendim?” with question intonation. In this case, the other person realizes that we do not hear or understand him and repeats what she/he says.

In addition, when we don’t like what is said, we use a special intonation to say “efendim!?”. This means “I heard what you said, but I don’t like it.” The other person will then realize that we are not happy with what she/he said and they will correct what they said.

Finally, if someone calls our name, we can respond by saying “efendim?”. It’s a polite way of saying ”what?”.

Other greeting phrases

• Selam. Hi
• Günaydın. Good morning.
• İyi günler. Good day.
• İyi akşamlar. Good evening.
• İyi geceler. Good night.

As you can see, there is no such thing as “good afternoon” in Turkish; instead we say “İyi günler”.

A few more phrases;

• Tatlı rüyalar. Sweet dreams.
• İyi şanslar. Good luck.
• Hoş geldin (samimi) / Hoş geldiniz (resmi veya çoğul). Welcome.
• Hoş geldin‘e cevap olarak Hoş bulduk diyoruz .

Basic Turkish Words: Talking with Acquaintances

You don’t need to be formal when speaking Turkish! You can be sure that no one will judge you, especially if you are a stranger. However, I will state the following patterns for you, both officially and informally. However, I will write the following phrases for you both formally and informally.

• Adın ne? (informal) / Adınız ne? (formal or plural) What is your name?
• Adım Kate. My name is Kate.
• Nasılsın? (samimi) / Nasılsınız? (resmi veya çoğul) How are you?
• İyiyim. I’m fine.
• İdare eder. So so.
• Fena değil. Not bad.
• İyi değilim. I’m not fine.
• Tanıştığımıza memnun oldum. Nice to meet you.
• Memnun oldum. I’m pleased.
• Teşekkür ederim. Thank you.
• Teşekkürler. Thanks.
• Rica ederim. You’re welcome.
• Bir şey değil. It’s nothing.
• Önemli değil. No problem.
• Hoşça kal. Goodbye.
• Güle güle. Bye bye.

Basic Turkish Words: Celebrations

Celebrations have an important place in Turkish culture. In the past, weddings were held for forty days and forty nights! Today, weddings, birthdays and holidays are celebrated, but they are not how they used to be.

• Doğum günün kutlu olsun ya da  İyi ki doğdun. Happy Birthday.
• Yeni yılınız kutlu olsun. Happy New Year.
• Hayırlı Bayramlar. Eid Mubarak.
• Mutlu Noeller. Merry Christmas.
• İyi tatiller. Have a nice holiday.
• Afiyet olsun. Enjoy your meal.
• Tebrikler. Congratulations.

Basic Turkish Words: Condolences

In Turkey, people often mourn for forty days after someone dies. You can wish condolences in the following ways.

• Başın sağ olsun. My condolences.
• Toprağı bol olsun. Rest in peace.
• Allah rahmet eylesin. May god rest her/his soul.

Basic Turkish Words: Questions

• Gerçekten mi? Really?
• Ne? What?
• Nasıl? How?
• Kim? Who?
• Neden? Why?
• Ne zaman? When?
• Hangisi? Which one?
• Bu ne? What’s this?
• Ne kadar? How much?
• Kaç tane? How many?
• Ne demek? What does it mean?

Other Useful Turkish Words and Phrases

• Evet. Yes.
• Hayır. No.
• Belki. Maybe.
• Bilmiyorum. I do not know.
• Anlamıyorum. I do not understand.
• Geçmiş olsun. Get well soon.
• …istiyorum. I want…
• … istemiyorum. I don’t want…
• Affedersiniz / pardon. Pardon me.
• Lütfen. Please.
• Hesap lütfen. Check, please.
• Çok yaşa. Bless you.

This last one means “live long”. Some people also say iyi yaşa (live well) or sağlıklı yaşa (live healthy) instead of saying çok yaşa. In response to that, we say sen de gör (you see it too) or hep beraber (all together).

• Buyurun. Help yourself.

This word has more than one meaning. If you visit Turkey, you can hear this word all the time! Sometimes it means hoş geldiniz (welcome), sometimes içeri girin (come in) and sometimes alın, alabilirsiniz (take it, you can take it). When you pass by a restaurant, they will invite you in by saying buyurun and when your order is ready, they will serve it by saying buyurun.

If you really love Turkish, you already know what a beautiful language it is. Also, Turkish is a regular language and there are very few exceptions. This will help you a lot in your Turkish learning journey.

All you need is the desire to learn Turkish, the rest will come automatically!
